February #smallhobbywins of the Battle Systems Team

Woah February flew past! As you may remember back in January, the team were talking about their New Years resolutions and whether we’d actually stuck to them. That conversation quickly turned into listing off the games we wanted to play and hobby jobs we hoped to tick off over the Christmas break. It didn’t take long for us to spot that we all had fairly similiar reasons for not getting what we wanted done.

So this year, to help everyone in the same situation as we regularly find ourselves in, we’re going to start talking about #smallhobbywins. This will be all about the quiet, ordinary parts of the tabletop hobby that rarely make it online. Below is everyones update from February.

Michael

Did you keep to what you planned to in February?

Well my plan for last month was to paint at least one miniature, but I’ve managed to paint the whole warband of 7, plus 2 spare dudes that came with my wretches, so I would call that a success. I do want to add a bit more to them, specifically the overgrown wood could be better on my Praetor and then base the whole lot. Overall I am happy with the results, I think they capture the weathered, rusty, unkept feel I was going for, although they are a little messy and I would like to get a tighter quality to my painting in the future.

Is there anything you’d like to add / takeaway from your goal?

No I am pretty happy I am on track with my aim. Now I have a table ready warband I can get into some practice games of Trench Crusade and see how my guys are worthy of the demonic faith I have in them.

Is there anything in the hobby space that you’re particularly excited for this month?

I was very impressed by the official Trench Crusade miniatures that were recently released/announced. While they all look very cool I’m happy to have started my own unique warband, but this makes me more eager to get them on the gaming tables with other players.

Did I keep to what I planned in February… uh yeah… definitely… By this I mean I have built my Adeptus Mechanicus Kill Team so I now have even more grey shame to paint!!

Is there anything you’d like to add / takeaway from your goal?

I’d like to add to my resolution that I am fed up with John kicking my butt at every single board game we play on hobby nights, so I am going to play more tactical and have a list as long as my arm of games I’ve beaten him at this year!

Is there anything in the hobby space that you’re particularly excited for this month?

I have taken a bit of an interest in Trench Crusade after Tom and Michael played some one evening in the office, so this is something that has perked my interest. As well as the thought of Penguin getting closer..!

I wanted to make game night a more regular thing, at least once a week, with a focus on family board games. I have a shamefully high tower of board games, some of which have never been played!
I thought I fell short this month as we played sporadically but when I totted up the games I was surprised by how much we’d played.

At least eight games not including a tonne of video games. King of Tokyo is a game John introduced me to at the Battle Systems Christmas party-yes, we play board games at our works parties, we’re rock and roll. It was a good laugh and we’ll play it again.I may have lost to my nine year old.

Lego Monkey Palace is a game where you stack up Lego bricks to build the Monkey Palace. The rules seemed confusing at first but it’s a really simple game. I didn’t lose this time, I drew with my wife, young child may have sulked.

Quoridor Pac-Man – I played this several times with my son, and it felt like playing Nought and Crosses, we just took turns winning. He enjoyed it a lot more than me so I can see this getting dragged outa lot, against my will.

Pokemon Monopoly – a surprisingly enjoyable take on Monopoly. More fun than classic Monopoly but just as annoying when someone takes your stuff. The loser did the washing up. That was me. I then dusted down our old copy of Cityville Monopoly (if you remember that) and that was fun aswell.

We also played quick games such as Jenga – this is the game I whip out when there’s still ten minutes to go before bed time and my son needs distracting. If you’re a parent you know what I mean. Cobra Paw is also a good one, a quick and fun game which I almost always lose! When did I get so slow and senile??
Finally, Exploding kittens – my son loved this but it was too chaotic for me. It reminded me of the Munchkin card games which I never wanted to play and ended up giving to a friend.

Overall a very successful run of games considering we only stuck to game night once! We’ve made a point of having the games to hand and just playing impromptu rather than setting up the dining room table and over thinking it, we just played a lot of the games on our tiny coffee table in the living room.

Damn is it March already? I have epically failed to paint anything this month however I have printed some #redacted# to paint up for the Battle Systems stand at UKGE this year, alas, they are currently super-secret so no pics this month.

Is there anything you’d like to add / takeaway from your goal?

I still feel like 1 new set of miniatures a month is a good goal to aim for. I should probably paint Moranna at some point for the Four Short series.

Is there anything in the hobby space that you’re particularly excited for this month?

I play a lot of Warhammer Underworlds so I will be taking part in some events this month (including a trip to Copenhagen) trying to win an invite to the world championships.

John

Did you keep to what you planned to in February?

Not really, although I have started an OG Core Space Campaign at home!
I’ve played 45 different games over Jan & Feb so slightly less than last year!
I did go the whole of Jan without buying any games and only bought 2 in Feb which were at a Bring & Buy. Botanik a 2 player tile laying game with some stunning artwork and 3 Ring Circus by Devir. The first has been a hit at home the second we’re on the fence with and needs another play but maybe a bit light for our tastes to be a keeper.

I did also get a few more Moonstone mini’s painted, only 3 or 4 left to go!

Is there anything you’d like to add / takeaway from your goal?

Nope 😊

Airecon in Harrogate!

Tom

Did you keep to what you planned to in February?

Almost! I didn’t manage to get to the Trench Crusade narrative event I wanted to but I was at the Battle Systems Hobby Hangout evening!

Is there anything you’d like to add / takeaway from your goal?

Not yet, I really enjoyed learning Trench Crusade, me and Michael had a quite go at each others warbands. I borrowed a Stormcast Eternal that my son had painted as a proxy which was unfortunately defeated, sorry boy!
Then we played a few board games together which led us into the early hours of the morning. Great fun!

I’m looking forward to going to ChillCon. I’ll be attending in a personal capacity but will undoubtedly end up chatting work with people there. But there a couple seminars I want to catch and then ideally see if I can squeeze in a few demo games.

I painted four of these Grot Scuttlings, just need to add some grass tufts to the base. And now I’m batch painting 8-9 squigs!

Is there anything you’d like to add / takeaway from your goal?

I think I should vary my paint queue more, maybe add some humans or undead to mix up the colour palette.

Is there anything in the hobby space that you’re particularly excited for this month?

I’m continuing the Mordheim campaign tomorrow, my Marienburgers are doing well!

That’s it for the February check in. We’re going to come back every month to follow what everyone has been getting up to.
You can join in on too!

Be sure to use the #smallhobbywins on social media to post your WIPs, games with friends, your cup of tea and biscuit while reading the rule book for the game you’re getting into. Lets celebrate the effort we all put into making life a little more enjoyable.
