Terrain Designer

Do you want to design the next generation of tabletop terrain?

Terrain is the heart of what we do here at Battle Systems. We may make games, but they wouldn’t have the impact they do without their immersive tabletop settings, from high-tech space station corridors to post-apocalyptic streets to atmospheric dungeons. Our award-winning card terrain is all illustrated digitally and overlaid onto handmade physical prototypes, and that’s where you come in – our workload is overflowing and we need more help!

We’re looking for someone who loves the challenge of turning 2D concepts into beautiful yet functional 3D tabletops for gamers all around the world to battle across. You’ll have genuine creative influence and will be working as part of a small, passionate team.

If you have experience in cardboard terrain, laser-cut MDF, resin casting, scratch-building, architectural model making, industrial design, 3D puzzles, or any other relevant area, whether personal or professional, we’d love to hear from you.

Core Responsibilities

  • Create original concepts for new terrain pieces that are visually exciting, intuitive to assemble & practical to play on.
  • Design components that align with our modular assembly systems and established signature style.
  • Develop structures that work within the constraints of 2D flat-pack manufacturing.
  • Produce physical prototypes and refine designs through practical testing.
  • Collaborate with the rest of the design team to evolve existing product ranges and develop entirely new ones, ensuring consistency of style and technique.
  • Review prototypes and production samples and liaise with manufacturers and other collaborators to refine the designs.

Additional Responsibilities

This is a specialised design role for our own little niche in the tabletop gaming industry, and it may be tricky to find all of the required skills and experience in a single person! Our focus is on finding a candidate with the creativity and engineering skills to design the 3D prototypes, but the ability to handle artwork/texturing, create technical production files, or assist with any other stage of the design process will be a bonus. These responsibilities include:

  • Create artwork and textures in a realistic style to illustrate new components.
  • Create designs for game components and supporting materials.
  • Lay out production files following provided templates and specifications.
  • Create terrain assembly instructions in video and/or pdf format using photos, renders, drawings or other suitable method.
  • Product photography and image editing.
  • Support the marketing and sales teams with any required imagery.

About You

Our ideal candidate will:

  • Love building terrain, designing environments people want to explore across a range of different genres.
  • Think in systems, naturally accounting for modularity, expandability, assembly, gameplay, storage, manufacturing and visual variety.
  • Understand physical construction, with experience designing or building sturdy and visually exciting scale models.
  • Understand tabletop games – they will appreciate what concepts will be thematically appropriate, how the components will be physically used, and how that affects their design. From wargaming to board gaming to TTRPGs, our ideal candidate will recognise how terrain influences gameplay and vice-versa.
  • Have prior experience, whether professional or personal, in any of the following: tabletop terrain design, scratch-building, paper-craft terrain, laser-cut MDF terrain, scale modelling or modular kit design, industrial or product design or architectural model making.
  • Have creative flair – be able to create concepts that are beautiful as well as practical.
  • Work efficiently under their own initiative
  • Be able to accept feedback and adjust their work accordingly
  • Be eager to work in a growing business and influence our future prospects

To meet the additional responsibilities, it will be useful for the candidate to:

  • Be able to create textures and artwork in a realistic style consistent with our existing products
  • Be proficient with Adobe Creative Suite, including Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign.
  • Have experience with CAD programs or other 3D software.
  • Have experience of manufacturing printed components, including books, boxes, cards, and die-cut punchboards.

Location and Working Requirements

This is a full-time role with flexible working arrangements, primarily based in our office in Redditch, UK. There is the option to work from home part-time depending on business circumstances and individual performance.

Generally, we expect you to work 37.5 hours per week, 9-5 Monday to Friday, but when you’re not attending the office the exact hours and days are flexible.

From time to time you will be required to work weekends to attend conventions and other events, and you will be given time off in lieu.

There is no fixed start date for this role – we’re just looking for the right person to fill the gap in our team. We’re happy to take someone on immediately if they meet all the criteria, but we can be flexible around each candidate’s circumstances.

Remuneration

The base salary for this role is £30,000 – £40,000 p.a. depending on skills and experience.

We offer 25 days’ paid holiday (plus bank holidays) and a NEST pension scheme.

There will be opportunities for pay increases each year depending on your contribution to the business and the economic climate.

You will of course also receive a generous staff discount on all Battle Systems products.

How to Apply

Please email your CV to stewart@battlesystems.co.uk, and in your email please highlight why you believe you are suitable for the role. Please also submit examples of your relevant design work, and indicate a rough idea of your current/expected salary.

If you have any questions before applying, please don’t hesitate to ask.

There is no closing date for this vacancy – we’re waiting for the right person (or people!) to come along.

We look forward to hearing from you!
