Four Short of a Strategy – Quest C Preparation

Welcome to Four Short of a Strategy, a video series where the Battle Systems team takes on the Dungeons of Enveron campaign from their game Maladum. If you missed the first article and video in this series you, can read and find a link to the video here.

The second dungeon saw the party members take a divide and conquer approach. Similar to the first dungeon, thanks to the lower value of the party, Novice Event cards kept them out of trouble allowing them to push their luck long enough to gather all of the objectives available in this quest.
Again most of the party managed to make their way back to safety, but as Grogmar was forced to remain behind for one last turn… again, an event card swapped the staging area location which left him fighting more adversaries than he could handle.
If you have time to watch Tom’s reaction, it’s well worth a few moments of your time – Watch Here
Grogmar being defeated meant that the party lost Objective One and the ability to attempt Quest B. Costing the party an additional opportunity to gain XP and valuable loot before progressing further into the campaign.

Below we’re going to spend a little bit of time talking about how the players have chosen to upgrade with their XP from the previous dungeon. For obvious reasons, we’ve missed out Grogmar, fingers cross for the third dungeon!

Character Builds

James – Nerinda
James, has chosen to level up Combat Arts ahead of this Quest. After receiving a little criticisism for not getting too involved in combat and just running around looting, he seems to be preparing to get more up close and personal in this dungeon.

This gives Nerinda the ability to sweep an enemy off their feet from under them. Knocking an enemy that is in contact with them prone. Also as a passive ability, Nerinda’s attacks gain Quickstrike. If using a weapon that also has Quickstrike Nerinda may Dash AND Attack. This combined with an additional skill peg definitely suggests Nerinda is gearing up for some action in the next quest.

Nerinda doesn’t seem to be dropping the moody, looking after herself persona. Maybe she will warm to the party as they go on more adventures together.

John – Brahm
Looking back at the last dungeon John felt that the party were quite split up. At one point leading him to be trapped in a room, prone, with no weapon. Not an ideal situation for even the most seasoned of adventurers.

Using the XP from the last dungeon John has given Brahm an additional skill peg and added an extra point to Tricks of the Trade. Meaning that as a reaction when a trap card or token is drawn targeting this character or a friendly character within short range and LoS. brahm is able to spot and disables the trap’s trigger before it is set off. Also as a Passive ability Brahm may make a General Search as an effortless action.

John, ever the tactician, seems to be readying his character to help out party members in sticky situations and make the most of that extra effortless action. Will his team player mindset help see Grogmar out of this next dungeon?

Dan – Moranna
Dan happy that Moranna survived once again. For Moranna Dan has chosen to take an additional spell, specifically the Level 1 spell Protect.

Potentially he is worrying about retaliation from Nerinda after Moranna hit her with a Fireball, perhaps it is a tactical decision as Quest C requires the party to defeat enemies in order to gain Objectives.

Only time will tell.

Quest C – A New Power Rising

Broken, bloodied and bruised, you dragged yourself back to the village with relics in tow. It was unclear which startled the guild master more; the violent manner in which you kicked the door open or the very fact of your return, “You’ve returned! And with such finds, this certainly is a cause for celebration!” None of your party was in the mood for such festivities, and the master’s demeanour soon shifted to suit. “Ah yes, the cave isn’t quite as empty as we believed…are you sure I failed to mention this?” Too angry for games, you collect what is due and depart the reprobate’s office. You thought you would be content with your reward, but the horrors below are unlike any you have faced before, and the thought of the danger they pose haunts your conscience. Recounting your experiences to the village elders, they suggest seeking the wisdom of the scholars in Kelthion. However, you will surely need tangible evidence if they are to believe your claims to be any more than fairy tales, so you venture once more into the caves to learn of this new threat…
