Join the Team! Marketing Manager/Graphic Designer

Battle Systems is recruiting! Our current team is at saturation point and we need some help to create exciting new products and thrust them into the limelight. If you can help, read on!

While we’d love to welcome our global Battle Systems fans into the fold, please note that both roles are at least partly office-based so applicants will need to be relatively local.

There are two different roles available. Details of location and salary for both roles can be found at the bottom of the page.

Marketing Manager

We make a lot of awesome stuff, but what we don’t do enough is tell the world about it! We’re looking for someone to oversee our marketing efforts and create engaging content. The impending Maladum retail launch this year will be the first big project!

Responsibilities

  • Plan and manage our marketing calendar across all channels, including the Battle Systems website/blog, email newsletters, social media, trade sales material, external content creators and direct advertising.
  • Work with content creators, both internal and external, to create and schedule supporting content for all our product ranges.
  • Create in-house content in written and video format, including assembly and gameplay tutorials.
  • Oversee the Battle Systems presence at shows and conventions including UK Games Expo and Essen Spiel.
  • Follow industry and competitor trends to drive relevant content, and maintain a presence in online communities to review customer feedback.
  • Liaise with our design, trade sales and operations teams [team is a strong word – some of those teams aren’t even a whole person!] to ensure all requirements are met.

It’s important to point out that this list is not exhaustive. These are just the things we currently do, but there are certainly lots of channels we’re not using or things we’re not doing (or things we don’t even know exist!) that could improve our business and we’re excited to hear your thoughts.

About You

Our ideal candidate will:

  • Have experience in digital marketing, including knowledge of social media, email marketing and content creation. Knowledge of ads and analytics will be beneficial but not essential.
  • Have a very high standard of written English and the ability to communicate effectively in various styles.
  • Be confident promoting and demonstrating our products in front of the camera to create video content.
  • Be highly organised with strong planning skills.
  • Have wide-ranging knowledge of the tabletop gaming industry and current trends.
  • Work efficiently under their own initiative.
  • Uphold Battle Systems’ reputation and values.
  • Be eager to work in a growing business and influence our future prospects.
  • Be proficient with Microsoft Office.

As a marketing role there is a strong focus on visual content, so many parts of the role will involve image and video editing. It would be beneficial for the candidate to have a basic level of skill in these areas, but it is not essential – other members of the team can assist if required.

Graphic Designer

Everything created by Battle Systems requires graphic design work. Some of it supports the products, from packaging to promotional images, while in most cases it actually IS the product – our card terrain is all designed and illustrated digitally alongside the physical prototypes. Our design workload is overflowing so we need more help!

Core Responsibilities

  • Create designs for game components and supporting materials following a brief. All information must be presented clearly, consistently, and in line with how it will be used by the customer.
  • Lay out web/print-ready files following provided templates and specifications.
  • Review proofs and production samples and liaise with manufacturers and other collaborators to make adjustments.
  • Edit photographs and other imagery for use in packaging, marketing materials, gameplay diagrams, etc.
  • Support the marketing and sales teams with any required imagery.

Additional Responsibilities

The Battle Systems team is already packed with graphic designers, which means we can work around whatever the new recruit can bring to the party. A candidate who covers all the core responsibilities will free the existing team up to focus on terrain design and new products. On the other hand, a candidate able to take on any or all of the following additional tasks will relieve pressure in other areas and share the overall workload. Either option works for us.

  • Compose and take photographs of our products for a variety of purposes.
  • Create terrain assembly instructions in pdf format using photos, renders, drawings or other suitable method.
  • Create artwork and textures in a realistic style to illustrate new terrain pieces and game components.
  • Engineer the required components to prototype and assemble terrain pieces in 3D.

About You

Our ideal candidate will:

  • Have a high level of proficiency with Adobe Creative Suite, including Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign.
  • Have experience of a wide range of printed components, including books, boxes, cards, and die-cut punchboards.
Work efficiently under their own initiative.
  • Be able to accept feedback and adjust their work accordingly.
  • Have knowledge of tabletop gaming to understand how the components will be physically used and how that affects their design.
  • Be original. We try to avoid simply recreating designs seen elsewhere – wherever possible our designs are unique to us, trying to offer a twist on seemingly ubiquitous terrain.
  • Be eager to work in a growing business and influence our future prospects.

Adaptable Roles

Battle Systems is a small, collaborative team, and all of our jobs tend to overlap at times. As such, these roles can be adapted to fit the candidate. We may find a candidate perfect for most parts of a role but lacking experience in other areas – if that happens we will adjust the workload and the rest of the team will provide support.

Equally, especially in this industry a candidate may bring something that we haven’t asked for, but that could really benefit the business. For example, you may be able to sculpt or paint miniatures, or you might have a talent for game development or character illustration. As long as our applicants fill the core requirements, the rest of the role can be adjusted (and paid) accordingly.

Our salary ranges are therefore appropriately wide and negotiable, allowing us to find the perfect compromise between the skills of the applicant and the needs of the business.

Location and Working Requirements

These are full-time roles with flexible working arrangements. The roles will be partly based in our office in Redditch, UK. You will be expected to attend the office to collaborate with the team and be hands-on with products whenever required, and you may attend the office full-time if you wish, but otherwise you will be free to work at home or a location of your choice.

Generally we expect you to work 37.5 hours per week from 9-5 Monday to Friday, but when you’re not attending the office the exact hours and days are flexible.

Salary

The salary for each of these roles is in the range of £25,000 – 37,500 p.a. depending on the candidate’s skills and experience. All required equipment will be provided, and expenses paid where appropriate.

There will be opportunities for pay increases and/or performance-based bonuses each year depending on your contribution to the business and the economic climate.

You will of course also receive a generous staff discount on all Battle Systems products.

How to Apply

Please email your CV to stewart@battlesystems.co.uk, and in your email please highlight which role you are applying for and why you believe you are suitable. Attachments or links demonstrating your previous work would be appreciated. Please also indicate a rough idea of your current/expected salary.

If you have any questions before applying, please don’t hesitate to ask.

The closing date for applications is April 8th 2024.

We look forward to hearing from you!
