Well… after saying February flew by March didn’t exactly slow down either!
Since kicking this off in January, #smallhobbywins has turned into our way of keeping ourselves honest. No big claims, no “this month I’ll paint an entire army” just actually doing the thing we said we would. Or at least hoping too. Because, let’s be real, it’s far too easy to let hobby time slip. Bigger plans get parked, life gets in the way, and suddenly another month’s gone.
Here’s what the team managed in March.
Michael
Did you keep to what you planned to in March?
My plan for March was to add some finishing painting touches to my Trench Crusade warband and then base them, and I’m really pleased with the results.
After a little shopping around I bought the Army Painter Battlefields Basing set as its an ideal collection to get started with.
As my warband has a Hellish origin I did think about giving them some kind of grey, ash like basing, but I really like the World War 1 aesthetic to the game, so I stuck with a gravel floor with patchy grass and a few boulders here and there.
Even for the models that had printed base I felt this really brought them to life.
Is there anything you’d like to add / takeaway from your goal?
Now the models are fully painted I need to focus on the gameplay. I had a couple of practice games with Tom back in February but I wasn’t able to make the Battle Systems March hobby night, so I’m eager to get back on the boards in April. With that in mind I’ll be spending my evenings swotting up on the Trench Crusade rules.
Is there anything in the hobby space that you’re particularly excited for this month?
The new Trench Crusade starter set does look reeeeeally nice. I have also been eyeing up Kill Team though, and have an interesting idea for a Chaos Warband.

Did you keep to what you planned to in March?
Not at all. I have two Kill Team Squads that are patiently waiting to be painted now!
Is there anything you’d like to add / takeaway from your goal?
Yes. I plan to add a slight detour into my journey of getting two Kill Teams painted… I am going to paint another Maladum adventurer who will be my next adventurer in the Four Short Series when Nerinda eventually unfortunately perishes, but whom is a secret.
Is there anything in the hobby space that you’re particularly excited for this month?
Not particularly. I’m still looking forward to getting stuck into Trench Crusade at some point, as well as Project Penguin 🙂

Wow, March came around quick. I had every intention of playing a load of card based games but the time ran away with me. I must try harder!
However, I did play a lot of Battleships. So much Battleships! Luckily I’m a strategic genius 🙂

Did you keep to what you planned to in March?
I managed to do a lot of model assembly. I am now the proud owner of a massive sea of grey Grand Cathay plastic for Warhammer: The Old World.
I also got another Warhammer Underworlds warband painted and managed to secure a 3rd place painting trophy with them at a recent competition.
Is there anything you’d like to add / takeaway from your goal?
I have come to the decision that pre-planning hobby is not working for me so will be taking a more relaxed approach for the rest of the year (Yes, Moranna remains unpainted). A month sounds like a long time but I feel like I was surprised it was March a week ago and now I’m surprised it’s April.
Is there anything in the hobby space that you’re particularly excited for this month?
My quest for a World Championship of Warhammer ticket continues. No events this month but I came extremely closer to the win in Copenhagen so I’m going to be spending this month refining my deck and getting a lot of practice in before some events in May.

Did you keep to what you planned to in March?
In March I attended Aircon in Harrogate for 4 days of 10am-1am gaming! An annual UK event that should be in everyone’s diary (If you’re in the UK).
I also finished the last 4 Moonstone Mini’s, I’m particularly happy with Beaky Bobby!
I did also get a few more Moonstone mini’s painted, only 3 or 4 left to go!
Is there anything you’d like to add / takeaway from your goal?
Nope 😊 I did cave and buy some games this month from the Bring and Buy at Airecon, including Perseverance Castaway Chronicles 1 & 2 as well as 3 of the Onirim world games: Sylvion, Aerion and Nautilion mainly drawn in by the artwork! Also very excited to back the new Voidfall expansion on Kickstarter!
Is there anything in the hobby space that you’re particularly excited for this month?
Still super excited about Project Penguin and hope we get chance to get some more games in the office this month.

Did you keep to what you planned to in March?
Again no! I wanted to make my way up to Chillcon but unfortunately I was unwell on the day so chose to stay home instead of risk a mass infection. I did however push myself to get some of my Kill Team painted.
True to my resolution I’ve also reached out to some local gamers who were looking for Kill Team players with the plans that we have some hobby hangouts and eventually take ourselves up to Nottingham for a mini tournament day between ourselves.
Is there anything you’d like to add / takeaway from your goal?
No, pushing my self out there to start being a little more social has been really good. Even if this month it did need to be more online than in person.
Is there anything in the hobby space that you’re particularly excited for this month?
It is Easter half term in the first half of this month (kids have two weeks off school) so I will be out of the office with my mini me visiting Zoos and doing other half term activities like building Lego. I’d love to get my Kill Team painted within this month, and I’ve just picked up the new edition DND Player’s Handbook so reading that will take up alot of my evenings too!
That’s it for the March check in. We’re going to come back every month to follow what everyone has been getting up to.
You can join in on too!
